Guidance for organisers of professionally fired firework displays

The HSE guide “Working Together on Firework Displays” (HSG 123) was originally written in1995 to provide guidance to organisations staging firework displays where professional firework operators are responsible for setting up and firing the fireworks.

The British Pyrotechnists Association (BPA) was involved in the production of the original guide, and with its subsequent revisions. However, there have been significant developments in firework displays since the HSE guidance was produced and many of there commendations in the original guide are no longer appropriate. In particular this guide addresses the following changes:-

  • Changes to the types of fireworks used and hence to the means of rigging/firing
  • Changes to Risk Assessment methodology
  • Changes to display design and hence to means of rigging/firing
